Building a home is exciting, but it also comes with a few financial curveballs. One of the most important things to get right is understanding what your contributions will be at each stage of the construction process. From laying the slab to final handover, your lender will release funds in stages, and you’ll need to be ready to cover your share along the way.

This is the first major milestone. It includes site preparation, laying the foundation, and pouring the concrete slab. It may also include plumbing and drainage that goes under the slab.
This stage involves constructing the skeleton of the house—walls, roof trusses, and window frames. It gives shape to your home and sets the structure for the next stages.
At this point, the external walls, windows, and doors are installed, effectively “locking up” the house. It’s a key stage for security and weatherproofing.
This is where the internal work begins. It includes installing plasterboard, cabinetry, internal doors, skirting boards, and other fixtures like sinks and baths.
The final touches are added—painting, flooring, electrical fittings, and final plumbing. Once this is done, the builder will conduct a final clean and prepare the home for handover.
Each of these stages typically triggers a progress payment from your lender, and you may need to contribute your own funds depending on your loan structure. If you’re unsure how this works with your construction loan, our Melbourne-based mortgage brokers at Acceptance Finance can walk you through it and help you plan your contributions with confidence.
